Naturopathic medicine is health care using alternative therapies and natural remedies to stimulate the body’s own healing abilities.
The five guiding principles of naturopathic medicine are:
Naturopathic medicine is a comprehensive, prevention-based, and natural approach to improving health and treating illness. The goal is to treat the whole person and address underlying causes of illness, rather than to simply treat or suppress symptoms.
Careful questioning about all aspects of an individual’s life allows naturopathic doctors to uncover the root cause of health issues. Symptoms of disease are seen as warning signals of improper functioning and unfavorable lifestyle habits. By creating specific treatment plans, naturopathic doctors help to remove obstacles to healing, guiding you on a path to optimal health.
Naturopathic doctors are provincially regulated (licensed), primary care practitioners, with a minimum of seven years of post secondary education. Four years are spent studying the basic medical sciences as well as naturopathic treatments and philosophy, at an accredited naturopathic college. Over the course of their studies, students take on increasing responsibilities in the teaching health clinic of the naturopathic college, under the supervision of licensed naturopathic doctors.
Two sets of licensing exams must successfully be completed before a naturopathic doctor is eligible to practice in Ontario. Continuing education courses are ongoing for licensed naturopathic doctors, allowing for life-long learning and expansion of knowledge and skills.
Doctor means “teacher”. Naturopathic doctors are here to educate you and guide you along the path to wellness.
Naturopathic doctors work in cooperation with all other health care providers to ensure the best treatment for you.

The first visit includes a complete medical history and discussion of your health concerns. A standard physical examination will also be performed. For your convenience, the Adult Intake or Pediatric Intake forms may be downloaded here, to bring with you to the first visit.
On the second visit, your assessment and treatment program will be reviewed. Treatment may include any combination of therapies such as dietary recommendations, lifestyle changes, acupuncture treatment, homeopathic remedies or nutritional supplements.
Follow up visits will be booked, as necessary, to review your progress, make appropriate changes to your program, and promote ongoing wellness.
Most benefit packages cover naturopathic treatments. We encourage you to contact your employer or individual insurance agent to determine if you are covered.
First time patients of naturopathic care often want help staying well, or they want to find an effective treatment for a specific health concern. Increasingly, people are turning to naturopathic medicine because they appreciate one of the underlying tenets – vis medicatrix naturae, or the healing power of nature. Naturopathic doctors work with this healing force using alternative therapies such as clinical nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy, and acupuncture treatment to improve your health.
Individuals and families experiencing chronic or acute conditions can benefit from naturopathic medicine. The following are some examples of conditions that can respond to naturopathic alternative therapies:
Many health problems for people of all ages can be addressed using naturopathic medicine.
It can be effective for both treatment and prevention of “dis-ease”.
